How Did I Go From Having It Together to Missing Every Appointment

Updated: Jul 15

As a little girl, I organized my toys. Never a minimalist I just liked knowing where things were. But it wasn't until I had my own children that being organized stopped being a preference and became survival.
I had my in-laws nearby, but back then, ours wasn't the closeness I'd grown up with in my village not yet the kind where you can hand your child to someone else's arms and exhale without a second thought. That relationship has grown so much since. But at the time, it wasn't there, and I didn't feel it. Organized wasn't a personality trait anymore. It was how I held the ship steady when I didn't feel like anyone else was fully on deck with me.
For years, that worked. As my children grew, we moved into homeschooling, and I reorganized our learning space more times than I can count because a mother figures out how to evolve right alongside her kids.
Then, slowly, things shifted. My children grew more independent. We walked through the loss of loved ones. And somewhere in the middle of it, I looked up and realized there was no longer a captain steering our home not because I'd stopped trying, but because I was buried under more than any one woman could carry alone.
Then my body joined the unraveling. Decades of migraines. Heavy bleeding that wouldn't let up. That's when everything truly spiraled until I hit a bottom so complete I couldn't keep a single appointment on my own calendar, even with the planner right in front of me.
But that bottom became something I didn't expect. It became the springboard I needed to start moving back up.
If you're standing anywhere in this story whether you've never had it together, or you did once and watched it slip through your hands hear this before you read another word:
You are not broken. You are not failing. You are buried. And buried things can be brought back to life.
I'm not writing this to fix you. I don't think you need fixing. I think you need someone to look at exactly where you are and tell you the truth: you are not alone, you are not gone, and what feels lost right now is still yours, still recoverable. I see you. And I've been you.
What I didn't know then: that buried, stretched, lost feeling isn't a failure. It's the natural response when a woman has been carrying more seasons than any one season was built to hold.
A seed doesn't instantly become a tree. It roots and grows in quiet seasons long before it bears fruit. Every season has a purpose, and prepares you for the next.
The buried feeling you have right now might actually be trying to tell you something a signal, an invitation, that this season is shifting, and something in you is ready to rise.
The Mess Was Never the System

For a long time, I believed the answer was adding more. More structure. More discipline. More ways to hold it all together, tighter.
But what I've actually walked through taught me something different. Systems and discipline help, I'm not against them. But they were never the foundation. Something deeper was being asked of me: not more control, but more presence. Not more pressure, but more awareness. A return to the heart.
The heart is not something to manage. It is something to listen to.
This Week, Not Someday
You're halfway through summer. The newness has worn off, and the real weight has settled in the part where the questions get honest: why does this still feel so heavy?
Instead of asking how do I get through this week, try asking how do I stay with myself in this week?
That shift changes everything. You stop managing around the ache and start listening to it. And when you stay present with yourself, your family gets to stay present with you too. The wonder you're both looking for starts showing up in the ordinary moments.
Buried Things Can Be Brought Back to Life

This is what coming back to life actually looks like not a dramatic overnight shift, but quiet formation happening underneath the parts of your life you can already see.
Ask yourself honestly: what part of your life is different today than it was a year ago? Not perfect. Not finished. Just different. We get so fixed on where we're still going that we forget how far we've already come.
You were never gone. You were buried under everything you've been carrying. Hear this plainly: you are seen, exactly as you are. And you are valued not for what you manage to hold together, but simply because you are you.
The Practice

This week, try this instead of one more system:
Pick one moment you already live every day folding laundry, driving carpool, standing at the sink after dinner. Right there, pause and ask yourself: am I managing this moment, or am I staying with myself inside it?
Then go a step further. Let yourself daydream, on purpose: this is the life I dreamed of. I get to care for the people I love. I get to actually experience my own life.
And if it helps, think for a moment of the ones you've loved who didn't get to keep aging alongside you. Not to feel the weight of it, but to let it open your eyes you get another ordinary Tuesday, another opportunity to create life, right here in the middle of it. That's the gift they'd tell you not to sleep through.
You don't need to fix the answer. Just notice it, and imagine it, even for thirty seconds. That's the whole practice. That's the Heart Reset not a checklist, a witness.
Before you go I'd love to know: what's the one thing in your life that feels different today than it did a year ago? Tell me in the comments, or just sit with it. Either way, I see you.
If this is the season you're finally ready to stop adding more and start being seen instead, the Wonder Reset is where we do this work together in person, with the space that makes the noticing easier to hold. I'll share details on the next one soon.
For now, just this: am I managing this moment, or am I staying with myself inside it? Ask it once today. See what it stirs.
Wake Wonder, because wonder changes everything. Every island begins beneath the surface. So do you. Stay rooted. Keep rising.
